Hello Friends!!!! How are we doing today?! I imagine everyone's weekend went well. Especially now that football is back! Football season typically coincides with the consumption of alcohol/beer drinking and crappy fried food. Because whether you are going to the actual game, or posting up in front of a T.V., these items typically go hand and hand. That's why this blog is in perfect timing for football season. My intent is to get you healthy during the week, so when the weekend comes you can have some fun! But before the indulgence of fun, you must know one thing.....
"You better check yourself before you wreck yourself. Because I come real stealth, and I am bad for your health!" Oh the famous lines of Ice Cube, the rapper. His delivery of this line in this song has the intent to promote fear of him. He is a figure not to be dealt with. My purpose of this line is to promote health and understanding, and only a slight fear or bad bacteria. :) But I do have to give a big Thank You to Mr. Ice Cube, because I do love that song and his rhymes. Cheers, mate! Anyways, back to my purpose. Did you know 65%-70% of your immune system resides in your gut. That's a lot! That is almost 3/4's of your immune system designated to one are of your body. I think it is fair for me to say, taking care of your gut is vital for your health.
Not convinced? Try to this theory out. All diseases and sicknesses start as a constant inflammation. After days, weeks, months and possibly years of the body fighting a particular virus or bacteria(inflammation) in the body, the resulting factor always ends up being a disease or sickness. So if 70% of your fighting back system is in your gut, then most illnesses start in the gut.
You got to be kidding me, you still don't believe me?! (Sigh), okay then. Well let's look at the last 20 years in America. Children nowadays experience the highest rates of allergies and illness at a young age. It it sill mind boggling to me, the amount of children who are allergic to peanut butter. When I was in school if you didn't have lunch, you would be given a peanut butter sandwich. Now in schools, if a child has a peanut allergy, in some cases the child can't even inhale it. This is crazy! But if you have read and researched, like I have, none of this is very surprising. Two incredibly big reasons why. One, America is a very bacteria scared nation. We rub sanitizer on our hands and limb in hopes to create a sterile and clean environment. We are hoping this keeps up from getting sick. But remind me again what the Hand Sanitizer says on the bottle? Oh yeah, that's right, "KILLS 99% OF BACTERIA!!!!" Why is this a good thing? Here is where the title of the blog comes into play. Bacteria can be put into two groups, good and bad. So when you put a hand sanitizer on your body that kills 99% of the bacteria, you essentially just killed half of your good bacteria. And bad bacteria's infiltrate when there aren't enough good bacteria's.
A fair question to pose. Did that hand sanitizer make you healthier? Personally, I don't think it does. I haven't been sick in years. And since my research, I have take upon myself to notice others who are close to me that use hand sanitizer. They tend to get sick more often than me. Now it's not fair to place it all on hand sanitizer, because Diet, Sleep and Exercise play a huge role in staying healthy. But simply making an area sterile, doesn't make it healthier. Many third world countries, who have no access to running water, led alone hand sanitizer, are much healthier overall than Americans. They do not see a huge population of their people getting sick with Cancer, Allergies and Alzheimer's. They also eat food that hasn't been refrigerated and will sit out for days. Have you ever heard of the Ganges River? Yes, you probably have. It's heavily polluted with fecal matter and and trash. Yet, people still bathe in it. Imagine if you or I went and bathed in it? We would be seriously sick. So why are they able to? It shouldn't be puzzling, their immune systems are tougher. And the immune system starts at birth. This leads in to my second point, numero due(Italian for number 2). :)
What else has increased ten fold in the last 20 years? If you guessed C-sections or Caesarean Section births, you would be correct. For the record, I am not knocking C-sections. They are definitely beneficial in certain scenarios. The reason why I mention it, is actually quite interesting. Traditionally when a baby is born, the last pass through the moms downstairs region is vital. The mother's body is prepped and ready to give her child or children the right start to life. Whatever hormones and chemicals the mother is producing at that last moment, allows the child to start building good bacteria. Even the child brushing up against the mother's fecal matter through the last pass, jump starts good bacteria. Mother's if you are reading this, don't feel alarmed or worried. Just because you didn't have a natural birth, that doesn't mean your child isn't or won't be healthy. Good health for newborns starts in the beginning by many factors, not just the last pass through the mom at child birth. Good bacteria can be attained through diet and supplements. Food/live items like sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir, kombucha, cheese, yogurt, sourdough bread, pickles/pickled vegetables, tempeh and miso, are all fermented foods that help build good bacteria. **To be noted, sauerkraut and pickled items must be made with salt and water, not in vinegar. If it's in vinegar then it has been cooked. You want one that has been fermented naturally. If you are taking a supplement of probiotics, you need to rotate the brand and type. Just look at the back label to notice different strands of bacteria.
In Conclusion, probiotics are great for health. But in order for them to work at a high level, they need to be supplemented with a healthy diet. Probiotics and Pre-biotics work in succession. If you are eating a poor diet, it won't matter how many probiotics you take. Your body will be beyond inflamed. Now I know I crack joke's a lot. But this blog means a lot to me. If you are struggling with a healthy diet, just reach out. I got you! Since the insertion of probiotics in my life 6 months ago, I have felt incredibly better.
If you are wondering where I have attained most of this information. It came from a book. The title of the book is Brain Makers, by David Perlmutter. It is an eye opening book. Give it a read or listen. You will not regret it! ** Like always, please consult with a doctor before making any changes.
Until the Next Blog,
Stay Blessed,
