Happy Monday Ya'll!
Today's blog marks the first chapter in our new book about gut health, Eat Dirt by Dr. Josh Axe. My goal is to be the cliff notes of this wonderful book. I have implemented a couple of the dietary suggestions this past week in my diet, I must say I do feel a nice difference. Before the cliff notes, one brief explanation on why the gut is important.
Your gut is responsible for 70% of your immune system and 90% of your serotonin. If you are someone who is sick often and unhappy with life, then your gut needs improvement.
In Chapter 1 Dr. Josh Axe speaks about his mother's poor health and another woman who was one of his patient, both suffered from some serious health issues. His mother was experiencing a second bout with cancer. the other woman was having difficulty losing weight and struggling with low energy. To cure them, Dr. Axe put them both on good gut building diets. Dietary items like Kefir, Bone Broth and Ground Flax seed are a few he mentioned. These three items help repair the lining of your gut. naturally your gut lining is supposed to have some permeability. The gut allows certain nutrients and liquid to be passed through into the blood stream. This is a healthy exchange for the body. When you eat items like gluten in excess, the permeability can become compromised. This is where the term leaky guy comes from. When your gut becomes leaky inflammation in the body will start to occur. All diseases and illnesses start as a small inflammation, this is why ensuring your gut lining is in a great state is vital for health.
Dietary isn't the only reason for leaky gut. Heavy stress from work or home life creates too much yeast in the body. The creation of yeast is a natural reaction to stress, but excessive stress will lead to a leaky gut.
A healthy diet of lean protein, vegetables, beans/legumes, sprouted grains, fruits and nuts/seeds will not repair a leaky gut. Probiotics are required, and are best found in fermented foods. The woman I mentioned in the above paragraph was eating a very healthy diet, but still wasn't able to lose weight. How come you ask? Her gut was too permeable, and she wasn't absorbing the nutrients that food offered. She needed to start taking S.B.O.'s.
Other Important Info
-Bad guts occur because of Societal structure to diet. I.E. excess sugar, indulgence of unsprouted/hybridized grains and processed foods causes Leaky gut
-Leaky gut has been linked to Auto-Immune Diseases, Anxiety, Depression, Alzheimer's and ADHD.
-Supplement Suggestion, S.B.O.'s which stands for Soiled Based Organisms. Improved the absorption of nutrients, eliminates yeast over growth and improves bowel function.
